Empowering Connecticut Communities

Extension programs are in full swing this summer, both in-person and online. we are here to serve and empower our Connecticut communities, while co-creating solutions to the critical issues that residents and communities are facing. Programs focus on the expertise of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR) and incorporate UConn's research. These areas include agriculture and food, climate adaptation and resilience, enhancing health and well-being, and sustainable landscapes at the urban-rural interface. All programs incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, as we strive to empower all Connecticut residents.

There are opportunities for you to become further involved with Extension programs this summer. Our UConn 4-H program is preparing for the new 4-H year that begins on October 1st and we need help statewide implementing these programs. Volunteer opportunities include one-time commitments and ongoing involvement. Extension is hiring in different locations at our statewide offices. This summer, we welcomed 17 interns to work on various programs and extend our knowledge further while providing them with life transformative educational opportunities. Finally, we continue adding to our suite of online programs that are offered in both synchronous and asynchronous formats. We look forward to working with you on our various programs and initiatives.

Donor Support

Growing Statewide Programming

The work of UConn Extension serves thousands of people across Connecticut. UConn Extension educators work in all 169 cities and towns helping Connecticut residents to solve problems in their communities and provide transformational learning experiences to program participants. This couldn’t be done without the financial support of generous donors, many of whom have experienced Extension programs firsthand.

Here are some examples of funds and programs made possible by the generous contributions of UConn Extension donors (read the list of our most recent donors).

David E. and Nancy H. Bull CES Innovative Programming Fund

A generous gift from Nancy H. and David E. Bull provides funding to support innovative programming in Extension through a competitive application process open to personnel with a full or partial Extension appointment. Applications must explicitly identify the innovation proposed and the risks involved along with the potential to influence future program delivery.

Master Gardener Fund

Donations to the Master Gardener Fund are critical to the ongoing training and community outreach that they provide. Donations literally keep the program going and also allow for increased accessibility and flexibility in learning modalities which combines online learning with traditional classroom instruction.

4-H Centennial Fund

The 4-H Centennial Fund was created in 2002 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the national 4-H program. Donations to the fund ensure that participants in the UConn 4-H program have the opportunity to participate in unique and exciting state, regional and national 4-H events.

Donations to UConn Extension make it possible to reach more people with unique and innovative programming that solves problems in communities and enriches the lives of Connecticut families. Donors can rest assured that their contributions matter and significantly impact the lives of Connecticut residents.

UConn 4-H Participant Turns Astronomy Project into a Potential Career

A third-grade science project introduced Angela Bojarski, now 16, of Scotland, Connecticut, to astronomy, and she’s loved the subject ever since. She joined UConn 4-H five years ago and made astronomy her primary 4-H project. One of the hallmarks of the UConn 4-H program is that it provides youth with life transformative experiences and empowers them to choose the topic. The self-directed route of the 4-H program, along with guidance from her volunteer leader and UConn Extension 4-H educator, have helped Bojarski take her passion for astronomy down the path of a potential career.

“You know how everyone is encouraged to do STEM careers, 4-H is where you can actually try them,” Bojarski says. “UConn 4-H isn’t just about agriculture; I didn’t realize all the options that were available until I got involved.”

Bojarski has come a long way since starting with Styrofoam and hikes. She’s now teaching herself to build computer models for astronomy and wants to explore this as a potential career.

She attended the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama in summer 2022. During the weeklong camp, Bojarski learned about the space exploration program and how it started. Campers completed astronaut simulation trainings, scuba diving training, and a moon gravity simulation, in addition to their classroom time.

“The cool moon walks are harder than they look,” Bojarski says. “We completed three missions at camp, and one took place on Mars. It was three hours long and everyone had a role in it. We also simulated spinning on all three axes, and this was the best training we did.”

Ask UConn Extension

How is seaweed grown and harvested in Connecticut?

Anoushka Concepcion, one of our Extension educators, discusses the history and benefits of seaweed, particularly sugar kelp. Sugar kelp has a short growing season in the early spring when the product is available. Concepcion discusses this nutritious food option with a sugar kelp farmer and chef, providing many ideas for incorporating Connecticut grown sugar kelp into your menu.

The Sea Grant network established the National Seaweed Hub to serve as a science-based, non-advocate resource for the domestic seaweed aquaculture industry and associated sectors. The National Seaweed Hub serves as a mechanism to address emerging challenges, share information, foster collaboration and ensure resource developed in response to various stakeholder needs are publicly accessible. Led by Connecticut Sea Grant, the National Seaweed Hub is managed and facilitated through collaborative partnerships with the National Sea Grant Law Center, and with Sea Grant programs in Alaska, California, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Woods Hole, MA.

Help UConn 4-H with Life Transformative Education

4-H Volunteers Play a Significant Role

If you enjoy working with children, have a willingness to share your time and talents with young people in the community, like to have fun, learn new skills and make a difference, then being a 4-H volunteer is for you.

4-H volunteers play a significant role in helping youth to reach their potential. As a volunteer, you will help youth in your group learn leadership, civic engagement and life skills through projects and activities. If you have a hobby or interest you would like to share with young people such as photography, leadership, animals, plants, fishing, drama, community service, computers and technology, woodworking, fashion design, arts and crafts, rocketry and more, consider becoming a 4-H volunteer.

Online Classes

Riding High on Online Learning

UConn Extension is exploring ways to keep meeting Connecticut residents where they are. UConn Extension started exploring online learning long before the pandemic. The state-wide outreach program began teaching online classes in 2018, with many of their 462 programs offering online options. Despite the Covid landscape allowing for more in-person events, UConn Extension plans to continue offering multi-modal options to best serve as many residents of the state as possible.

Extension Highlights

Co-Creating Solutions to Critical Issues

The past two years have challenged us more than anyone could have predicted. Extension adapted our services and programs to continue serving our audiences. We are addressing critical issues related to agriculture and food, climate adaptation, enhancing health and well-being, social justice, and sustainable landscapes.

Extension is unique because the services we provide are place-based. This place-based perspective allows us to customize solutions for Connecticut residents and we offer programs in all 169 cities and towns. The broader impacts provide our communities with science-based, results driven solutions. Our educators understand the unique challenges that Connecticut faces and co-create solutions for critical issues with those communities.

Our Highlights of Extension emphasizes the regional work we do in the state. This includes the Coastline, Capital Region, Litchfield Hills, and the Quiet Corner. We share the results of our collaborative partnerships with other state agencies and organizations. Extension’s geographic connection to Connecticut impacts everyone in the state, and we also share the stories of a few of our people and programs that are improving lives.

Extension continues providing transformational learning experiences to all our audiences. We adapt and collaborate to find solutions for human, environmental, and agricultural issues.
