Every year on October 16, World Food Day reminds us that food is more than a meal — it’s a story that begins in the soil and extends to every community table. At UConn Extension, we see that story every day. Our work starts with Connecticut’s farmers, supporting them with science-based research and resources that help them grow nutritious food, strengthen local economies, and steward natural resources. From there, our programs extend through the food system — helping communities access fresh, local foods and empowering families with the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices.
Through our community nutrition programs, we provide hands-on education in healthy meal preparation, food budgeting, and preservation. We partner with schools, nonprofits, and local organizations to ensure that nutritious food reaches everyone, from urban centers to rural towns. Food security and public health are inseparable — and both depend on resilient farms, informed consumers, and equitable access. That’s why UConn Extension brings together expertise in agriculture, nutrition, and community development to strengthen Connecticut’s entire food system.
On this World Food Day, we reaffirm our commitment to:
- Supporting farmers and sustainable agricultural practices
- Expanding access to local, healthy food for all residents
- Empowering families through nutrition and food education
- Building resilient communities connected through food and health
Food starts on the farm — and through education, collaboration, and community, it builds healthier lives. Learn more about how UConn Extension supports farmers, families, and communities at extension.uconn.edu.
